The Great Achievement of The Furless Ones – by R.A. Combrink

The Great Achievement of The Furless Ones

Furless apes Commanding great animals of steel.
Claws of iron,
Legs that go round.
They hew trees,
Build roads.
Destroy and don’t rebuild.

The animals are sorrowful.
Slouched, hiding,
crouching, fighting
in the shadows.

The animals are wan.
Just skin, just Bone.
Frailly moving
Fewer, fewer, fewer,
Fewer, fewer,
Fewer.

The animals are Gone.
All that is left is
Bone.
Nothing.
No forests –
Stripped and burned.
No grasslands –
Dead, infertile, Irreplaceable.
No animals –
Gone, forever.
Skeletons.
